Bugzi Loan Scheme

QEF Mobility Services

The Bugzi Loan Scheme enables families and clinicians to access Bugzi at a time in a child’s life when they can most benefit from the discovery, experience and learning that independent mobility brings.

The service is provided at our mobility centre in Carshalton, Surrey, and through partner centres in other regions of England.

What is Bugzi?

Bugzi is a small indoor powered wheelchair designed and manufactured by MERU to enable young children to explore and learn about their environment. It comes with the Active Design Mini Caps seat and tray together with a range of different control options to suit a child’s particular skills.

Bugzi is designed for disabled children aged from 18 months. There is no upper age limit however there is a weight restriction of 25kgs. We currently provide Bugzies to children aged 2 to 8 who live in the UK and who have Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, and a range of non-neurological conditions.

How does the Bugzi Loan Scheme Work?

We provide a Bugzi, normally to take home on the day of the assessment. A returnable deposit of £100 is required. Review meetings and return at the loan end will be scheduled. On return the Bugzi is be refurbished and provided to the next family. There are currently 45 Bugzies in the loan fleet.

apply, if you are the parent or guardian, we ask that you complete the form with your supporting clinician – usually your Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.

Our application pack is available from the Apply for a Bugzi links below.

Assessments take place at QEF Mobility Services Centre.

Our occupational therapist will measure your child for the mini caps seat which is assembled whilst your child’s preferred means of control is discussed. Your child is then invited to try Bugzi in our supervised indoor environment for about 30 minutes.

With all in agreement the Bugzi is completed ready for transport. We will train you in the use of Bugzi including loading Bugzi into your car and confirm the conditions of the loan. Occasionally there can be short delay for availability. The loan is for approximately one year, but not limited if your child is still benefiting. We monitor progress at approximately 6 month intervals and require the Bugzi be returned and the end of the loan.
