School for pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities

The Garwood Foundation

Rutherford School - This specialist school caters for 3-25-year-old children with profound and multiple learning disabilities and complex medical needs where we work with parents and carers to provide excellent learning opportunities for students.

Our school has a dedicated team of staff whose aim it is to enhance the lives of our pupils by ensuring that learning experiences are fun, varied and challenging. The team of specialist professionals design programmes with practical outcomes to foster independence, learning and achievement for each pupil through meeting individual needs and building on strengths and abilities.

Our highly specialised curriculum is designed to provide education in an integrated manner incorporating learning, therapy and health needs for pupils whose significant disabilities are characterised by a high degree of dependency, and who require very specialised management for physical disabilities, sensory impairment and complex medical needs.

The school’s holistic approach facilitates learning that is supported and managed by a range of therapies which address physical disabilities, capabilities, sensory impairments capacities and complex medical needs of individual pupils. The therapies we offer are: • Speech & Language Therapy • Aquatic Therapy / Hydrotherapy • Music Therapy • Occupational Therapy • Physiotherapy • Rebound Therapy • Drama Therapy • Visual Impairment Therapy • Eye Gaze Technology The school’s mission is to: • For children to live as independently as possible • To provide a relevant curriculum for all • For our children to value themselves • To inspire enjoyment of learning • To foster a sense of belonging to a community • To create a culture of independence and learning for all pupils.

We offer inclusive education based on a multidisciplinary approach in our purpose-built classrooms, which are all fitted with an overhead hoisting track system. The school has 5 classrooms with ceiling track hoists to facilitate the pupils’ comfort and to ensure safe manual handling practices. Four of these rooms have their own en suite bathrooms while one has a bathroom in close proximity to it.

The school is home to: • An Outdoor Sensory Garden • A state of the art Interactive Learning Area (ILA), with advanced ICT features • A Sensory room • Hydrotherapy pool • Rebound therapy facilities • External client service for assessment, hydrotherapy and rebound Saturday Club • Summer Club Rutherford School goes beyond its statutory requirements to provide learning and therapy opportunities.

Recognising in 2002 that there are no accessible holiday clubs for our pupils due to the severity and variety of their disabilities, we introduced a holiday club. The Summer Club is activity-based and carries out themed activities for pupils in order for them to practice skills they gained in school in a different context. The activities aid their sensory skills, encourages independence and independent learning, creativity and self-expression. The school also employs its own nurses in order to establish stable relationships between the pupils and nurses to the care of pupils through familiarity and trust.
